A gambling sportsbook is a place where you can make wagers on a variety of sports. These sports are categorized by sport or activity. However, before legal sports betting was possible in the U.S., only select sports were legal. Today, you can place wagers on horse racing, greyhound racing, and other events. In addition, Montana has allowed bets on jai alai. Nevertheless, most states still prohibit the operation of sportsbooks.
Despite legalization in New Jersey, state legislators have not yet passed a gambling sportsbook bill. Several states have been trying to pass similar bills to make it legal. For instance, a Kansas sportsbook bill is in the works, but opponents are stalling its progress. A Kentucky sports betting bill is still pending, but conservative anti-gambling groups have been stifling its progress. Another bill in Maine, SB 102, was consumer-friendly but did not pass after a veto, but a Massachusetts bill is in the works.
In New Jersey, only the two big online sportsbook companies have opened their sportsbooks. The rest have been operating as standalone operators. DraftKings and FanDuel were the first two to open a gambling sportsbook in New Jersey, while BetMGM and FanDuel are launching apps for the iPad and iPhone. In the meantime, the number of land-based sportsbooks is still pending. In Nevada, each of the 20+ tribal casinos has the option of launching a sportsbook.
